The Castle Coole paintings demonstrate T.P. Flanagan's love of the landscape. The mood of the works evoke both absence and presence; the technique employed explores the play of light on colour and form. In the words of Lord Belmore: ‘It has been said there is an intimacy about the Irish landscape, and an ambiguity all too well captured by Yeats. But it is the light that fascinates Terry, and the ‘language’ of the landscape. To translate this language with all its hidden innuendoes is a feat achieved by only a few artists – TP Flanagan is one of those.’
