Height: 24.5cm
Caption
A carved stone head of which the pill-box head-dress consists of a slightly recessed band marked with vertical striations. This head along with FCM_1978_220 (A) were given by the late William Steele to the late Lady Dorothy Lowry Corry and were presented to the museum in 1969. This head along with the other head, probably belonged to a medieval church, perhaps serving as corbels or mask-stops. Their slight resemblance to Romanesque sculpture may be due to the use of Romanesque models by the medieval stone-carvers. This particular head has a more fresher surface than the head described in FCM_1978_220, there is also more obvious tooling marks. It could possibly be a more recent copy of the other. It has been suggested that these heads came from Devenish, Lisgoole or Rossorry, however, they could just as validly be attributed to any medieval church in the Lough Erne locality.
