Caption

This brass belt plate from a uniform of the Yeomanry Infantry, raised by Lord Erne, the first earl, in 1799, is inscribed ‘Crum Castle Infy’ and ‘Rebels Lie Down’. The yeomanry were set up, from 1796, as a home defence corps, a mainly Protestant force paid for by the Government, in response to the threat of a French invasion and insurrection by the United Irishmen.
