Caption

This is the traditional cocked hat worn by the Lord Mayor of Enniskillen. After 1973 the town no longer had a Lord Mayor as the ‘borough’ status was abandoned and reorganised into Fermanagh District Council. The town of Enniskillen was established in 1612, and was part of a wider scheme of colonisation of English and Scottish settlers in Ireland, the Plantation of Ulster. Like many towns, Enniskillen based its civic structure and official dress on the English model and the City of London.
