Caption
This is the traditional wig worn by the Town Clerk of Enniskillen from 1949 - 1973. The Town Clerk was the senior administrative officer of the council, a position known today as the Chief Executive of Fermanagh & Omagh District Council. The legal-style wig is patented by Ravenscroft. Humphrey Ravenscroft patented the use of white horsehair in 1822, eliminating the need for powdering. It remains the model for modern barristers' wigs. Wigs were first worn in court as a result of a fashion that began under King Charles II of England in the 1660s.
