Caption

"Willow Epte was painted in Wales before I started at the Royal Academy Schools in 1988. The painting was painted between 1985 and 1987 and was inspired by the dappled changes light and reflection through willow trees by the river Epte. The painting was produced in the studio from memories and colour studies rather than from direct observation or representation. It shows a layered application of paint, gestural energetic brush strokes. It was painted at a time when I was beginning to challenge oil paint, and through a series of similar paintings eventually added raw pigments and waxes'. (Marion Thomson)
