Caption
Not many towns can boast of a map like this one of Enniskillen which names all the families inhabiting the town over 250 years ago, showing where they lived and the exact size of their holdings. Enniskillen at that time was owned by Lord Mont Florence, descendant of Sir William Cole, original founder of the Plantation town. He commissioned Farrel Mulvihill to make the map, probably as an aid to managing the leases and rentals of his property.
This is a hand-coloured and partly restored copy of a poorly preserved map held in the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland.
The left-hand side detail on the map provides the names of the residents of Enniskillen and the size of their holdings. Most live on the main thoroughfare, others in adjoining streets such as Water Lane, Pudding Lane, Padget's Land and School-house Lane. The map lists the main buildings of the town with their acreage and includes interesting details such as a drawbridge at the east end of town and gardens at Enniskillen castle.
