This beautifully made mantle was bought in Todd Burns, a long established department store in Mary Street, Dublin. It was machine made, with net, braid and beading, skillfully inserted into the satin fabric. The ornamental frill on the front is of Limerick-style lace.
Elderly women wore mantles like this out-of-doors in the summer when paying visits to friends. This very well made example probably belonged to a woman of upper middle class, who may have been in mourning.
