The title references the Dutch painter, Meindert Hobbema (1639-1709). The painting, with its low horizon and large expanse of sky, evokes the conventions of 17th century Dutch landscape painting. Whilst Fermanagh is the source of Jeremy Henderson’s inspiration, the artist focuses on the mood of the scene, rather than depicting an identifiable place. The dark, watery foreground beneath a mass of clouds, the light catching the green-leafed trees and the water’s edge, create a sense of unease, of expectation.
