Button was part of a uniform, worn by a member of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). On 31 August 1922, the disbandment of the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) took place, its replacement in The Irish Free State by Garda Siochana (21 Feb 1922) and In Northern Ireland by The Royal Ulster Constabulary on 1 June 1922. The Government of Ireland Act, 1920 saw the establishment of the RUC, a 3000 strong force for 80 years in the province.
