‘Whithorn’ is a rare textile piece designed by William Scott and printed by the Edinburgh Weavers. ‘Whithorn’ was commissioned by the architect Eugene Rosenberg for the interior of Northern Ireland’s new Altnagelvin Hospital. William Scott was also commissioned by the architect to paint a forty-five foot mural for the Hospital. The painting of ‘Four Seasons’ (1959) was a pivotal point in William Scott’s career in that it signified a move towards total abstraction as well as highlighting the influence of Scott’s friend, Mark Rothko.
