Son of Reverend George Tottenham and Emily Frances Maclean, Ponsonby John Loftus Tottenham (1858-1927) was born in Tynan, Co. Armagh and raised in Inishmacsaint, Co. Fermanagh. In this portrait, he is photographed as a young boy, wearing a top hat, aged around 10 years old. In adult life, Ponsonby became a career soldier. He began his army career in the 1st battalion of the South Staffordshire Regiment in 1882. Becoming a very experienced officer, he gained the rank of Major in 1901 while participating in the Boer War. During the First World War, Ponsonby John Loftus Tottenham used his organising abilities as a ‘Draft Conducting Officer’ to the Royal Irish Fusiliers.
