Caption
This view of Ely Lodge by the Scottish photographer David Welch, was probably taken between 1863 and 1868, when David ran a successful photographic business in Enniskillen. The building of Ely Lodge was begun in 1824 to a design by William Farrell. It was built for the 2nd Marquess of Ely, John Loftus, on Gully Island, adjacent to Castle Hume. The Lodge was blown up in 1870, as the climax to the 21st birthday celebrations of the 4th Marquess. The intention was to build a new grand house. This did not materialise, however, as funds were spent on rebuilding Loftus Hall in County Wexford instead.
