At the outset of T.P. Flanagan’s career, the landscape of Lissadell, Co Sligo exerted a strong pull on the artist’s imagination. As a boy, T.P. Flanagan often visited his aunts who ran a lace school on the Lissadell Estate, seat of the Gore-Booths and Countess Markievicz’s childhood home. There are four paintings of Lissadell in our collection, ranging from the earliest work in 1945 to this drawing of the back avenue, executed in 1960. The Lissadell works make an interesting comparison to the sparer, more classical lines of the later Castle Coole series of paintings.
