T.P. Flanagan's painting depicts the Cursing Stones located on Inishmurray Island, Co Sligo. This early medieval monastic site on the island was founded by St. Molaise in the 6th Century. The title, ‘Cursing Stones’, refers to the 'Clocha Breaca' (speckled stones) - sometimes known as the 'holy stones' on the monastic site. A number of stones are engraved with circles and crosses.
