In the spring of 1958, TP Flanagan's friend, the poet, John Hewitt, submitted 'Teazles' to the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition, London, on the artist's behalf. The picture had been previously exhibited at the Belfast Art College Association's annual exhibition. TP Flanagan had been given the teazels by his friend, Norman Carruthers, the Belfast botanist.
