T.P. Flanagan painted 'An Ulster Pastoral' two decades later than his earlier painting, ‘Ulster Elegy’. The later, ironically-named ‘An Ulster Pastoral’ contrasts in approach and mood. Here the ‘troubles’ are depicted more prosaically as part of the landscape itself. The half-hidden army watch-tower and shattered building are almost indistinguishable from the surroundings.
