"In Casper David Friedrich's Studio No. 2"
2004
Henderson, Jeremy
Oil on paper
Casper David Friedrich (1774-1840) was an important 19th century German Romantic landscape painter. He once stated that he had to stay alone to fully contemplate and feel nature. Jeremy Henderson greatly admired Friedrich's work and approach. The interior scenes act as a tribute to the German Romantic artist's continuing influence and legacy. The central window in Jeremy Henderson's paintings looks inwards onto the empty studio scene. The studio series was on display at Fermanagh County Museum, Enniskillen Castle, throughout the period of the COVID-19 lock-downs in 2020/21. The still, contemplative mood of the paintings appeared reflective of the times, with buildings and galleries empty of people and sound.
